In Texas, the program is managed by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) and benefits are provided using the Lone Star Card.

Who Receives SNAP Benefits?

  • In Texas, adults aged 18 to 54 without children can receive SNAP benefits for three months within a three-year period.
  • Those who work at least 20 hours a week or participate in an employment or training program may be eligible for extended benefits.
  • Households with all members aged 60 or older, or those containing persons with disabilities, can apply through the Texas Simplified Application Project (TSAP) for easier access to SNAP.

When are the Benefits Distributed?

Benefits are distributed between the 1st and 28th of each month, based on your Eligibility Determination Group (EDG) number:

  • For Households Certified Before June 1, 2020:
    • 1st to 15th of the month, depending on the last digit of the EDG number.
  • For Households Certified After June 1, 2020:
    • 16th to 28th of the month, based on the last two digits of the EDG number.

What Can't You Buy with SNAP?

In Texas, SNAP benefits cannot be used to purchase:

  • Tobacco.
  • Alcoholic beverages.
  • Non-food items.
