What is Summer EBT?

Summer EBT, also called SUN Bucks, is a government program that helps low-income families buy groceries during the summer months. When school ends, many children lose access to free or low-cost meals they normally receive at school. This program helps fill that gap.

Each eligible school-age child receives $120 to help cover food costs while school is out.

What Can You Buy?

You can use Summer EBT benefits to purchase:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Dairy products
  • Grains and bread
  • Meat and poultry

You cannot use the benefits for:

  • Alcohol or tobacco
  • Household supplies
  • Vitamins or supplements
  • Pet food
  • Hot prepared meals

States Starting Payments in June 2026

The following states and areas will begin sending Summer EBT payments in June:

State/Area When to Expect Payment
Alabama June
California First $40 in June, then $40 in July and August
Connecticut Late June
Maine June 1–15
Massachusetts Early June
Maryland First $40 in June, then $40 in July and August
New York June 16 or later
North Dakota Started in May, continues into early June
Virginia June (rolling basis)
Washington DC June 11

Some states pay the full $120 at once, while others split it into three payments of $40 each month.

How Much Could Your Family Receive?

  • 2 eligible children = $240 total
  • 3 eligible children = $360 total

Who Qualifies?

Your child may automatically qualify if your household receives:

Children may also qualify if they:

  • Attend a school with free or reduced-price lunch programs
  • Are in foster care
  • Are enrolled in Head Start
  • Come from migrant families
  • Are experiencing homelessness

If your family isn't automatically approved, you can still apply. Generally, your household income must be at or below 185% of the federal poverty level.

How Will You Receive the Money?

Benefits may be:

  • Added to your existing SNAP EBT card
  • Loaded onto a Summer EBT card you used before
  • Sent on a new card in the mail

Important: Make sure your address is up to date with your child's school and benefits office so your payment arrives on time.

Don't Forget to Use Your Benefits

Summer EBT benefits expire 122 days after they are issued. Be sure to use the money before it runs out.

What Should You Do Now?

Since each state has its own schedule, check with your local Summer EBT program to find out exactly when your payment will arrive. With grocery prices still high for many families, this extra help can make a real difference this summer.
