The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a great help for many older adults to buy more food every month. However, going to the grocery store can sometimes be tough, especially if you find it hard to move around much or if getting a ride is a problem.

Thankfully, you can now use your SNAP EBT card to shop for groceries online, either for delivery to your home or for picking them up at the store. This service is available through apps or websites from lots of big stores all over the country. It's an easy way to get the food you need without physically going to a store.

Wondering where you can shop online with your EBT card? Here's a list of some big stores and what they offer:

  • Amazon: You can buy groceries from Amazon and have them delivered or picked up through Amazon Fresh, using your SNAP EBT card all across the USA. Amazon has a wide range of food that you can buy with your EBT card, but remember, if you're not an Amazon Prime member and your order is below $35, you might need to pay for shipping.
  • Target: Target allows you to use your EBT card online for groceries, which you can get delivered to your home or pick up at the store using their Shipt service. Same-day delivery is available for $9.99, but if you order enough or have a Shipt membership, delivery is free.
  • Walmart: All 50 states allow you to use your SNAP EBT for online grocery orders with Walmart for either delivery or free curbside pickup, as long as you meet the minimum order amount.
  • ALDI: You can use your EBT card for online orders at ALDI, both for in-store pickups and deliveries.

Other stores that accept EBT for online orders include Albertsons, H-E-B, Hy-Vee, Kroger, Safeway, Stop & Shop, and ShopRite. Always check with your local store to see what options they offer.

What About Food Delivery Apps?

  • DoorDash: Recently, DoorDash started accepting SNAP payments for grocery deliveries and pickups. This means you can use your EBT card to order fresh groceries through their app or website.
  • Instacart: You can shop at many grocery stores using Instacart with your EBT card for delivery or in-store pickup in all 50 states. They even offer discounts on their Instacart+ membership for EBT cardholders.

What About Buying in Bulk?

Costco and Sam's Club: While you can use your EBT card in their physical stores, you cannot use it for online orders at either Costco or Sam's Club.

Can I Order Prepared Food with EBT?

No, most delivery apps like GrubHub, Uber Eats, and PostMates don't accept EBT because SNAP doesn't cover hot, prepared foods.

Am I Eligible for SNAP?

Many older adults eligible for SNAP might not know it or haven't applied, missing out on important help. Staying informed and utilizing available resources can make a big difference in managing your food budget and well-being.
